Conservation is solely about using less energy. Efficiency is about using less energy, while still being every bit as productive as you were before. Turn off a 60-watt incandescent lightbulb for an hour, and you’ve saved 60-watt-hours of electricity. Swap the pear-shaped bulb out for a 15-watt compact fluorescent, however, and you’ll get just as much light, while simultaneously saving 45-watt hours. On the road, efficiency might mean covering the same miles in a smaller vehicle or one that gets better gas mileage. Yet it could also mean the difference between simply not driving—and thus not going anywhere—and having the local infrastructure to make riding a bicycle a safe and easy alternative. Either way, energy use gets reduced, but the job still gets done.
